The Sutura Kids program was designed based on the adult program, Sutura Style Sew Like a Pro. However we use simpler projects and slow the pace down considerably. Your child will learn to:

  • Use and iron and ironing board safely
  • Prepare woven fabric for sewing
  • Trace, mark and cut a 1-2 piece pattern
  • Use a tape measure and take basic body measurements
  • Identify the correct size pattern
  • Draw their style ideas on a basic child’s croquis
  • Sew and finish a straight seam
  • Stitch a plain, machine sewn, hem
  • Make a casing for a drawstring
  • Use a sewing machine safely
  • Finish seams with a zigzag stitch
  • Work with bias tape
  • Finish raw edges with a serger
  • Add style with decorative stitches, ribbons, and other embellishments

Students can choose to exhibit their project at 4-H for ages 9-13. Our projects meet the 4-H standards. Your child will practice sewing skills on either a pillow case dress, a simple 1 piece top or a drawstring tote bag. These are practice projects and not designed for exhibit at 4-H.

As your child progresses, they will be encouraged to build on their sewing skills with new projects and fun filled style ideas at Level 2-4.
